Michigan's 2010 Recruiting Class

Michigan Recruiting Class of 2010

I am one of the people that obsess over recruiting, its just so interesting how high school players chose which college they want to go to and how they’re ranked I just find it really interesting and I hope you will to.

Quarterbacks grade A
Summary: Devin Gardner is the prize of this class and Conelius Jones adds depth if nothing else.

Devin Gardner 6-4, 195 lbs (#7 up there ^) is a dual threat quarterback from Inkster Michigan. Gardner is the real deal here a lot of analysts believe that he can throw better than Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor. He is also a great scrambler he’s so good that some fans believe that he should start over Tate Forcier. I totally disagree with that because we’ve had a freshman at quarterback for 2 years in a row now and look how well that’s going for us! I believe Devin is good but needs to learn the offense more he is enrolling early too so that should only help him learn the offense.

Conelius Jones 6-2, 197 lbs a dual threat quarterback from Spartanburg South Carolina. Jones didn’t play quarterback until his junior year in high school which is the main reason he has been off many schools radars. He got his offer to Michigan after he sent them his junior year film so apparently. Being in the same class as Devin Gardner isn’t going to help his chances of playing time but he’s fine with a position change since he’s only played quarterback for 2 years.

Running backs grade B
Summary: Got very good variety between running backs Drake the speedster, Hopkins the dozer, and White the guy who can do it all and catch! The only down side is that there’s no all star.

Toney Drake 5-9, 170 lbs a running back from Dallas Texas. Drake is a speed demon he is a homerun threat. I’m not going to talk about Drake too much do to the high possibility that he won’t make it academically to Michigan.

Stephen Hopkins 6-0, 235 lbs is a big running back from Flower mound Texas. Hopkins is unlike most running backs that Rich Rod recruits which is short and fast he’s going to be used at Michigan like Brandon Minor. He is confident that he’s going to add something special to Michigan and he being unlike most of the other backs is really likely to get some playing time early.

Austin White 6-0, 186 lbs is an all-around back from Livonia Michigan. White is kind of like a hybrid between Hopkins and Drake he’s faster than Hopkins and harder to bring down than Drake. But what he’s really good at is catching balls out of the backfield. From what I hear he runs a little too upright but that can be coached out of him.

Wide Receivers Grade A
Summary: Much like the running backs they have a bunch of different strengths and weaknesses like Jackson is a great rout runner and possession receiver, Miller is a deep threat and always seems to be able to find a way open, and Robinson is always in the hole of the defense. Another thing to think about is the fact that all three of these wide outs enrolled early.

Jeremy Jackson 6-2, 175 lbs is a tall receiver with great hands from Ann Arbor Michigan. His dad is the running back coach for Michigan so of course Jackson is really well coached he knows how to use routes to his advantage. While he’s a slower receiver he’s so well coached he can still get separation from defensive backs. He might end up as a Tight end because of his lack of speed but that never stopped Jason Avant.

Ricardo Miller 6-2, 208 lbs is a tall receiver that is very similar to Junior Hemmingway he actually moved to Michigan so that he could get use to the weather. Miller is the ultimate recruit he showed so much passion for Michigan he even would call some guys and tell them to come to Michigan! A bunch of people think that Miller is good enough to become the next great receiver to wear the famed #1 jersey that was last worn by Braylon Edwards!

Jerald Robinson 6-2 was 195 lbs when entering the campus and now after 2 weeks he weighs 205 lbs thanks to Mike Barwis Michigan’s strength and conditioning coach! That alone gets me pumped for this one time thought Ohio State lock! He’s been compared to Roy Roundtree where he isn’t super fast or tall it’s just that he knows where to get open. I can’t wait to see this guy in spring ball!

DJ Williamson 6-1, 175 lbs is a shorter receiver but with blazing speed! He has been a long time commitment. He’s not as highly ranked as the Jackson, Miller, and Robinson though he still keeps the speed to Michigan’s offense!

Drew Dileo 5-10, 175 lbs was actually recruited because he’s a returner specialist and I seriously don’t really care too much especially since we’ve been dropping punts lately! I’m happy for this guy because he really wanted to go to Michigan bad and he finally got his offer!

Offensive Line grade D+
Summary: This line consists of a center and that’s it, I’m pretty disappointed.

Christian Pace 6-3, 262 lbs is an underrated player on the O line I just wished he had some other O line teammates.

Defensive Line grade A-
Summary: Great depth and talent on the line it was a huge need this year with the lost of Brandon Graham to get great players and a lot of them and this year doesn’t disappoint.

Jibreel Black 6-2, 253 lbs can either be a defensive tackle or end he’ll probably go wherever we need depth. Black wasn’t really that into Michigan until he visited and really connected with coach Rich Rodriguez. He’s one of the most surprising commitments this year because he wasn’t really interested until about 2 weeks ago. He’s got a bunch of potential and the Michigan coaches believe that he can end up being a Brandon Graham or Lamar Woodley lets hope they’re right.

Jordan Paskorz 6-3, 225 lbs is thought to be a D end. He seems similar to Craig Roh who had a great season last year. He’s from Pennsylvania and it was between Michigan and Penn St. He might even be fast enough to be a linebacker.

Richard Ash 6-4, 263 lbs a defensive tackle from Florida. He had previously committed to West Virginia and then Rich Rodriquez gave West Virginia fans another reason to hate him! One thing that I love about coach Rod is that he can convince players to switch from other schools to him like Ash and Black.

Terry Talbott 6-4, 255 lbs defensive tackle is one of the twins from Ohio. He has been thought of someone who will explode after time with Mike Barwis and the weight room. They really believe he can become a Monster in the middle after some bulking up.

Linebackers Grade A-
Summary: Got a bunch of talent where we need it. This grade will depend on how players develop at their position from D end or safety. Josh Furman I believe will do amazing and start pretty early.

Josh Furman 6-2, 192 lbs a great linebacker from Maryland. He chose Michigan over Virginia Tech reasontly and started the rolling in of several defensive players to Michigan fan’s delight. Furman played running back in high school and was actually recruited by VT to play that position so he’s really fast and perfect for the spinner position. Furman is one of the 3 top linebackers that Michigan got.

Marvin Robinson 6-2, 190 lbs was a safety in high school but since he’s lacking elite speed he’s going to be a linebacker at Michigan and should be a really good one. Robinson is one of many commitments that we got from Florida.

Ken Wilkins 6-3, 244 lbs is from Pennsylvania. He’s going to convert from a defensive end to a linebacker probably a middle linebacker. He has been getting higher ranked lately so hopefully that means that he’s still getting better.

Antonio Kinard 6-4, 210 lbs is from Ohio. He is another one of Rich Rod’s “potential” guys which I’m totally fine with because of Michigan’s trainer he’s the best in the nation.
He’s been wrecking running backs in Ohio, which is a really talented state!

Davion Rogers 6-6, 210 lbs is from Ohio he’s actually a teammate of DJ Williamson. Rogers is one of the most resent commitments. He has amazing size so hopefully he can be a monster at linebacker!

Jake Ryan 6-3, 220 lbs is from Ohio and he and Rogers committed on the same weekend!
Ryan is a really big sleeper he matured late like he other family members. Just since the summer he’s grown 2 inches! He started getting interest from some Big Ten schools but Michigan was the first to offer and Michigan was his dream school.

Defensive Backs Grade B
Summary: Cullen Christian is a big pick up for Michigan but a lot of these guys are sleepers so I gave them a bit of a lower grade. But this grade could go up a lot if we were to get commitments from one or even both of the safety prospects Rashad Knight and Sean Parker.

Courtney Avery 5-10, 165 lbs is from Ohio. He actually didn’t play cornerback until his junior year but it was so natural for him that Michigan extended him an offer. He was pretty good at corner even without a lot of experience at the position.

Cullen Christian 6-0, 180 lbs is from Pennsylvania. He had Michigan as his leader the whole time and finally committed in November. He is a great shutdown cornerback with really long arms that can bat the ball away.

Carvin Johnson 6-0, 185 lbs is from Louisiana. A bunch of Michigan fans were mad about this commitment after they saw his rank and he saw that so he was wavering his commitment for a while. But after Michigan fans saw that LSU was going for Carvin Michigan accepted him with open arms go figure!

Terrence Talbot 5-10, 172 lbs is from Ohio and is the other Talbot twin! I don’t really know too much about Terrence I’ve heard a lot more about his twin. But he’s not ranked high so he’s probably got potential.

Ray Vinopal 5-10 175 lbs is from Ohio he actually got his team to the state title game! Ray knows that he odds of him starting aren’t the best but he loves the chance to prove himself against the big boys!

Special Teams grade A

Will Hagerup 6-4, 215 lbs is from Wisconsin and plays several different positions like linebacker! He is huge for a kicker he can both kick and punt he’s the best kicker in the nation and the 4th best punter! He’s going to be the next Zoltan Mesko! The only draw back is that he doesn’t have the coolest first name.
